Hurd, also known as shives, are the wooden core and make up 70 % of the stalk. which are removed during processing of hemp. Hurds consist of the woody inner portion of the hemp stalk, broken into pieces and separated from the fiber in the processes of decortication and are coarser and usually softer in texture.

Hurds are rich in Cellulose, highly absorbant , and a low generator of dust. Hemp hurds posess a measurable thermal and acoustical properties along with fire retardant capabilities. Hemp’s woody core are short and are similar to hardwood fibers. They are naturally combined with organic lignin. After retting, the woody core can be broken down into varying sized smaller peices. That can be separated from the fibers by processing.

Uses
Hemp Hurds can be used for a multitude of applications. Some include: Bio-Ethanol production, Mulching, and, Bio degradable garden mulch, and a variety of other environmentally friendly bio-products. It has natural antimicrobial properties which keep mold and mildew away. They are a great choice for Annimal and stable bedding for this very reason.


The building and construction industries have embraced the environmental benefits of this strong and versatile product. Some of these are:  Hempcrete, particleboard and medium density fiberboard, acoustic ceilings, and wall tiles, and much more.


Finely ground hemp hurd powder can be used as a filler in poloyolefine (plastic) matrix composites.
Hemp hurds can also be converted to pellets to produce a renewable source of feed stock for generating heat and energy.
